The number of narrations reported by Sayyiduna Husayn (radiyallahu ‘anhu)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

I have heard that Sayyiduna Husayn (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrated very few Hadiths. Can you confirm the number of Hadiths and share them with us?

Answer

I have managed to source thirty four Hadiths that are reported by Sayyiduna Husayn (radiyallahu’anhuma).

‘Allamah Mizzi (rahimahullah) has documented four narrations in his kitab, titled Tuhfatul Ashraf, that Sayyiduna Husayn (radiyallahu ‘anhu) has reported from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam). These are the only narrations of Sayyiduna Husayn (radiyallahu ‘anhu) that have appeared in the six famous books of Hadith (Kutubus Sittah).

(Tuhfatul Ashraf, Hadith: 3410, onwards)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has documented an extra nine narrations in his kitab, Ithaful Maharah, from various other Hadith books.

(Ithaful Maharah, Hadith: 4301, onwards)

Hafiz Ibn Kathir (rahimahullah) has also sourced an extra twenty one narrations besides the previously mentioned narrations in his Kitab, Jami’ul Masanid.

(Jami’ul Masanid, Hadith: 2183, onwards)

It should be noted that this is just a rough estimation based on the above sources that are prevelant today. It is not an exact all-inclusive number.

Some examples

Here are three examples of the Hadiths reported by Sayyiduna Husayn (radiyallahu’anhuma):

عن الحسين بن علي رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: للسائل حق وإن جاء على فرس

Sayyiduna Husayn (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said:

‘The beggar has a right (over you that you both think good and assist him) even if he came (riding) on a horse.’

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 1662)

عن الحسين بن علي رضي الله عنه قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: البخيل من ذكرت عنده فلم يصل عليّ

It is reported from Sayyiduna Husayn (radiyallahu ‘anhu) that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) has said: “The [true/real] miser is the one who does not send salutations upon me when I am mentioned (i.e when my name is mentioned).” (Sunan Nasai, Hadith: 8100)

عن الحسين بن علي رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم:  من حسن إسلام المرء تركه ما لا يعنيه

Sayyiduna Husayn (radiyallahu’anhuma) reports that Nabi (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

‘A sign of the beauty of a person’s Islam is that he shuns what doesn’t concern him.’

(Musnad Ahmad, vol.1 pg.201)
