A wise person’s astonishment at those who grieve the loss of wealth and are engrossed in the world

Can you mention the reference for this please?

عجبت ممن يحزن على نقصان ماله، ولا يحزن على فناء عمره، وعجبت ممن الدنيا مولية عنه، والآخرة مقبلة إليه يشتغل بالمدبرة، ويعرض عن المقبلة

Answer

Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abid Dunya and Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahumallah) have recorded this as the statement of [an unnamed] wise person.

(Dhammud Dunya, 241 and Az Zuhdul Kabir, 512)

Translation

I am amazed at the person who grieves the loss of wealth, but does not grieve the fact that his life is coming to an end. I amazed at the person who occupies himself with the [world] which is retreating, but turns away from the Hereafter which is fast approaching.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
