The value of offering Salah in congregation

What is the reference for this Hadith?

من صلى صلاة في جماعة فقد ملأ نحره عبادة

Whoever offers Salah in congregation has filled up his entire chest with [the reward] of ‘ibadah

Answer

‘Allamah Subki (rahimahullah) and ‘Allamah ‘Iraqi (rahimahullah) have stated that they have not come across any basis for this narration as a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

(Tabaqatush Shafi’iyyah, vol. 6 pg. 294 and Al Mughni ‘An Hamlil Asfar, Hadith: 387)

However, ‘Allamah ‘Iraqi (rahimahullah) states that a [similar] narration has been recorded in Ta’zimu Qadris Salah of Imam Muhammad ibn Nasr Al Marwazi, as the statement of Sa’id ibnul Musayyab (rahimahullah). The words of this version are as follows:

Sa’id ibnul Musayyab (rahimahullah) said: “Whoever protects [and regularly performs] the five daily Salah, has certainly filled his hands and chest with ‘ibadah of Allah.”

(Ta’zimu Qadris Salah, Hadith: 349)

This narration should therefore be quoted as the statement of Sa’id ibnul Musayyab (rahimahullah).

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
