Seeking forgiveness when making musafahah (shaking hands)

At the time of meeting someone, I have heard some people say, ‘May Allah forgive us and you'[يغفر الله لنا و لكم]. Is this proved in a Hadith?

Answer

This is probably due to the following Hadith recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud and other Hadith sources:

Sayyiduna Al Bara ibn ‘Azib (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “When two Muslims meet, shake hands, praise Allah and ask Him for forgiveness they will be forgiven”

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 5169. Refer: Mukhtasar Sunan Abi Dawud of ‘Allamah Mundhiri, Hadith: 5048)
