What is the authenticity of this narration?
عن زر بن حبيش قال: تسحرت ثم انطلقت إلى المسجد، فمررت بمنزل حذيفة بن اليمان فدخلت عليه، فأمر بلقحة فحلبت، وبقدر فسخنت، ثم قال: ادن فكل ، فقلت: إني أريد الصوم، فقال: وأنا أريد الصوم، فأكلنا وشربنا، ثم أتينا المسجد، فأقيمت الصلاة، ثم قال حذيفة: هكذا فعل بي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ، قلت: أبعد الصبح؟ قال: نعم، هو الصبح غير أن لم تطلع الشمس
Answer
Imams Ahmad, Abu Ya’la (rahimahumallah) and other Muhaddithun have recorded this Hadith. ‘Allamah Busiri (rahimahullah) states, ‘The narrators of Abu Ya’la are reliable (thiqat).
(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 5 pg. 396. Refer: Mukhtasar Ithafus Sadah Al Maharah, vol. 3 pg. 264)
Imam Tahawi (rahimahullah) mentions that this was probably before the revelation of the verse [and should therefore be understood as abrogated]:
وَكُلُواْ وَاشْرَبُواْ حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ
Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread of night
