The Hadith, ‘Whoever is able to marry and does not marry, is not of us’

Is this Hadith authentic?

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “Whoever is able to marry and does not marry, is not of us.”

Answer

This Hadith has been recorded in a few Hadith collections. Among them are:

  1. Musannaf ‘Abdur Razzaq, Hadith: 10376
  2. Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 16152
  3. Al Mu’jamul Kabir, Hadith: 920, volume: 22

‘Allamah Mundhiri and Hafiz Haythami (rahimahumallah) have declared the chain sound (hasan) and mursal. [Wherein a Tabi’i reports directly from Nabi sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam].

(Targhib, vol. 3 pg. 43, Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 4 pg. 251-252. Also see: marginal notes of Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah on Musannaf, Hadith: 16152 wherein Shaykh discusses the possibility of the Hadith being musnad and not mursal)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
