Leading the Tarawih whilst looking in to the Quran

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Please clarify the issue of offering taraweeh prayer led by an imam who is not a hafiz and therefore reads from mushaf in a small community with no other masjid with a hafiz. Is it allowed?

In defense people quote that Sayyidatuna ‘Aishah (radiyallahu’anha) used to offer tarawih led by a slave who use to read from mushaf ( al bukhari in. mu’ allaq report 1/245) Jazakallah khayran

Answer

For a fatwa, kindly refer to a reputable Mufti/Darul ifta.

As far as the practice of Sayyidatuna ‘Aishah (radiyallahu’anha) is concerned, this isn’t sufficient to prove a general rule, especially since it was done in the confines of her home, and on an individual basis. (i.e, without any large congregation)

Furthermore, the narration does not cite any approval of Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) either.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
