Wudu after eating camel meat?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Should we perform wudu after eating camel meat refer to the below mention Hadith? If not why?

Jabir ibn Samurah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) narrated: A man asked the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) whether he should perform wudu after eating mutton. He (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: “Perform wudu if you wish, and if do not wish, do not perform it. ” He again asked: “Should I perform wudu after eating camel’s meat?” He (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: “Yes perform wudu after eating camel’s meat.”

Answer

This Hadith of Sahih Muslim is considered as abrogated (mansukh) by the majority of the Fuqaha (Jurists), namely: Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Malik and Imam Shafi’i (rahimahumullah).

(Fathul Mulhim)

It’s not unusual for a Hadith to be authentic, but abrogated. There are verses of the Quran like this as well.

One should be aware that ‘not every sahih Hadith is practiced upon‘ i.e, a Hadith may be sahih (authentic) but abrogated, and is therefore not suitable for practice.

It’s a common malpractice of our era, that some misinformed individuals think that a Hadith being authentic is the only criteria for practice. This is incorrect and proves their lack of understanding of the principles of fiqh (Usulul Fiqh)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
