More merits of Ayatul-Kursi

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Could you clarify the authenticity of the following narrations on the virtues of Ayatul Kursi?

1)    Recite Ayatul Kursi at the time of leaving home, because 70 000 angels will protect a person from the right, left, front and back; and if he passes away before returning, he will receive the reward of seventy martyrs.

2)    Recite Ayatul Kursi forty times at the time of sunset daily, because its reciter will receive the reward of forty Hajj.

3)    Recite Ayatul Kursi every night before sleeping, as an angel is appointed to guard the person till the morning.

4)     Recite Ayatul Kursi after every ablution (wudu), as every word will elevate his status forty times.

5)    Recite Ayatul Kursi every time one returns home, for it repels poverty.

Answer

1 & 2. I was unable to locate the first two narrations. Though there are Ahadith that mention that one would be protected from all evil the entire day if it’s recited in the morning. The figure of 70,000 angels is not mentioned.

3.  Hadith three, has been recorded by Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) in his Sahih, Hadith (5010), with a slight variation.

4. Hadith four, has been classified as very weak according to the Masters of Hadith. (Tanzihu Shari’ah, vol.1, pg.298).

Hence, this Hadith does not fulfill the criteria of acceptance.

5.  Hadith five, has been recorded by Imams ibn Najam and Abul Husayn ibn Sam’un, on the authority of Sayyidatuna Aishah (radhiallaahu ‘anha). However, I am unable to clarify its authenticity for I do not have their chain of narrators.

Note

However, it should be remembered that unauthenticity of some of the above mentioned hadiths does not nullify the virtue of Ayatul Kursi.

In fact, there are numerous authentic hadiths that discuss its virtue such as it being the greatest verse of the noble Quran (Sahih Muslim) and if one recites it after every Salat, the only barrier between him and Jannah will be death (ibn Hibaan and Nasai) and he will be in the protection of Allah till the next salaat (Tabarani).

(Refer Fathul Qudsi of Hafiz al-Biqa’ie, pgs.39, 43, 47, 48 – 50)

Caution

One should exercise caution in quoting Ahadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam). It is haram and a major sin to intentionally quote Ahadith that are fabricated or extremely weak. Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) said:

“Whoever intentionally quotes a statement that is fabricated upon me, should prepare for his abode in Jahannam.”

(Sahih Bukhari)

May Allah Almighty save us all from recklessly quoting hadith, Aameen.
