Mu’adh ibn Jabal (radiyallahu ‘anhu) welcomes death

Could you kindly give me the Arabic text and reference for the statement made by Sayyiduna Mu’adh ibn Jabal (radiyallahu ‘anhu) welcoming death when he was passing away?

Answer

This narration is recorded in Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam Ahmad, Kitabul Muhtadarin of Imam Ibn Abid Dunya, Hilyatul Awliya and other Hadith collections.

(Kitabuz Zuhd: 1011, Kitabul Muhtadarin: 127 and Hilyatul Awliya, vol. 1 pg. 239)

Gist of the narration:

When Sayyiduna Mu’adh ibn Jabal (radiyallahu ‘anhu) was on his death bed, he asked those around him to check if dawn had set in. When he was informed that dawn had set in, he said, “I seek Allah’s refuge from a night whose next day leads me to Jahannam.’ He then welcomed death and called unto Allah having hope in his mercy and stating that had no inclination to the materialistic pleasures of this world, rather he underwent hardships and spent time in the company of the learned remembering Allah.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
