Exact wording of a sunnah du’a for morning & evening

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

1. One du’a that is mentioned for the morning is

Allahumma bika asbahna wabika amsayna wa bika nahya wa bika namutu wa ilaikan nushur

for the evening its mentioned

Allahumma bika amsayna wabika asbahna wa bika nahya wa bika namutu wa ilaikal masir

2. Is the above version of the evening du’a correct, or is it just Allahumma Bika Amsaina (without Wabika Asbahna) and at the end of the evening du’a is it Nushur or Masir?

Answer

1. This du’a is reported in several hadith books with varied wordings. One could therefore recite any of the proven versions.

The version quoted in your question is found in Mustakhraj Abi ‘Awanah, and has been preferred by ‘Allamah Jazari (rahimahullah) – the author of Al-Hisnul Hasin, pg.49 as well as certain other Muhaddithun (hadith masters). Refer: Al-Futuhatur Rabbaniyyah, vol.3 pgs.85-86.

2. The words you questioned in the du’a for the evening are found in Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 5029. See Shaykh ‘Awwamah’s annotation. (may Allah protect him)

‘Allamah Nawawi (rahimahullah) has also mentioned it with the same words in Al-Adhkar, (Hadith: 205- Darul Minhaj edition)

Those wordings are:

Allahumma bika amsayna wa bika nahya wa bika namutu wa ilaikan nushur

See the following references for other variations in the wordings:

Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3391, Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 3868, Sunanul Kubra of Nasai, Hadith: 9752, Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 29903, Sahih Ibn Hibban; Al Ihsan, Hadith: 964-965, Musnad Ahmad, vol.2 pg.354.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
