Using pure gold and silver utensils

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Do not drink from gold and silver utensils and do not eat from gold and silver plates.”

Is this Hadith authentic?

Answer

Imams Bukhari and Muslim (rahimahumallah) have recorded this Hadith. The Hadith is therefore authentic.

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 5426 and 5633, Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2067)

Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has recorded several Hadiths of this nature, which prohibit the use of [pure] gold and silver utensils. Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) states, ‘These narrations prove that it is impermissible for all Muslims who are of age, male or female to use gold and silver utensils.’ ‘Allamah ‘Ayni (rahimahullah) states that this is the view of all four Fuqaha.’

(Fathul Bari, Hadith: 5635 and ‘Umdatul Qari, Hadith: 5426)

Note: Kindly refer to a Mufti/Darul Ifta for a fatwa on this issue.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
