To use the right hand when counting Dhikr

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

I recently read an email which stated that our Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) prohibited the Sahabah (radiyallahu’anhum) from using their left hands to count when doing dhikr. Unfortunately I cannot find this email, and was hoping that you could find something in this regard and forward it to me. Jazakallah

Answer

Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn ‘Amr (radiyallahu’anhuma) says: “I saw Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) counting tasbih with his right hand. (Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith:1497)

The following hadith of Sahih Bukhari supports the above-mentioned narration: Sayyidatuna ‘Aishah (radiyallahu’anha) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) used to love to use his right hand for his taharah (cleanliness), combing his hair, and all things that were apparently good. (Sahih Bukhari Hadith169, 426) This hadith highlights the virtue of using the right hand for all credible and praiseworthy acts.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best,
