Hadith on wigs

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said, “May the curse of Allah be on the women who joins (another person’s) hair (to her own) and the one who asks for tattoos. (Sahih Bukhari)

Some Muslims consider it permissible to buy false or animal hair and braid it into their own. Does the above Hadith apply in the stated case?

Answer

The prohibition in the Hadith applies only to human hair. If one uses anything else, like fibers of wool or plastic, it will be permissible. (Al-Muwatta of Imam Muhammad vol.3 pg.427; Sharh Mushkilil-Athar of Imam Tahawi vol.3 pg.162)
