The Sahabi who picked up the morsel of food

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

There is a famous incident mentioned about a Sahabi having meals in the King’s palace when he dropped a morsel. Whilst cleaning and eating it one man told him how can you do that here. He replied: should I leave the Sunnat of my beloved for these Fools?!

Could you please source the reference.

Answer

This incident has been recorded in the following Hadith books:

Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 3278

Sunan Darimi, Hadith: 2029

and Al-Mu’jamul Kabir of Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah), vol.20 Hadith: 450

Note 1: The references above don’t have mention of the Sahabi referring to the non believers as fools. Rather it states that he said: I will not abandon what I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) saying for these Non Arabs/Non believers.

Note 2: The Sahabi concerned in this narration was Sayyiduna Ma’qil ibn Yasar (radiyallahu’anhu).

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
