Walking arrogantly was a cause for continuous punishment

Is this narration reliable?

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“A man from a nation before you left his home wearing two green garments boasting and strutting about in them. Allah commanded the earth to swallow him. He will continue sinking in it until the Day of Qiyamah.”

Answer

Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah) and other Muhaddithun have recorded this Hadith with a few chains on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Al Khudri (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 3 pg. 40)

‘Allamah Mundhiri (rahimahullah) and ‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) have declared the narrators of one chain reliable.

(Targhib, vol. 3 pg. 568 and Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 5 pg. 126)

A similar narration is also recorded in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 5789-5790, Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2088)
