Two rak’ahs after witr

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

There is a Hadith in Sahih ibn Hibban that Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said:

This journey is strenuous and exhausting. If you pray Witr, offer two rak’ahs afterwards if you wake up, otherwise they will be written for you.

How authentic is this Hadith? Please provide the reference.

Answer

Sayyiduna Thawban (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that we were on journey with Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) when he said:

‘Verily travelling is difficult and burdensome. Therefore, when you pray the witr, offer two [additional] rak’ats thereafter; if he then manages to awaken [for tahajjud, so be it]. If not, these [two rak’ats] will be for him [like tahajjud].’

(Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, Hadith: 1106, Sahih Ibn Hibban, Hadith: 2577, Sunan Darimi, Hadith: 1635 and others)

Imams Ibn Khuzaymah, and Ibn Hibban (rahimahumallah) have classified this Hadith as authentic (sahih).
