The twelve generations/brackets of narrators

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

I am looking for a resource that mentions the twelve generations of narrators of Hadith, the Arabic terminology as well as the English explanation.

Answer

You are probably referring to the twelve ‘tabaqat’ that Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has outlined in his book: Taqribut Tahdhib.

You may refer to his introduction therein as well the as the in depth discussion of Shaykh ‘Awwamah (hafizahullah) that precedes that.

Generally only qualified ‘Alims would actually refer to this or even need this. Such people are acquainted with the Arabic language.

I’m unaware of this being in English.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
