A Hadith encouraging visiting the graveyard, giving ghusl and reading janazah Salah

Is this Hadith authentic?

زر القبور تذكر بها الآخرة، واغسل الموتى، فإن معالجة جسد خاو موعظة بليغة، وصل على الجنائز لعل ذلك أن يحزنك، فإن الحزين في ظل الله يتعرض كل خير

Answer

Imam Hakim and Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahumallah) have recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

(Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 1 pg. 377 and vol. 4 pg. 330, Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 8851).

‘Allamah ‘Iraqi (rahimahullah) has also referenced it to Kitabul Qubur of ibn Abid Dunya; Al Mughni ‘An Hamlil Asfar, Hadith: 4429.

The Hadith Masters have differed on the authenticity of this Hadith.

Imam Bayhaqi and Hafiz Dhahabi (rahimahumallah) have declared the text of the Hadith unreliable (munkar).

‘Allamah Munawi, ‘Allamah Zabidi (rahimahumallah) and others have concurred with this view.

(Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 4554 and Sharhul Ihya, vol. 10 pg. 362)

Imams Hakim, Mundhiri and ‘Iraqi (rahimahumullah) have accepted it as reliable.

(Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 1 pg. 377, Targhib, vol. 4 pg. 339 and Al Mughni ‘An Hamlil Asfar, Hadith: 4429)

Translation

Visit the graves, it will remind you of the Hereafter, give ghusl to the deceased, for touching a lifeless body is a profound lesson, read janazah Salah perhaps it will cause you to grieve and one who grieves will be under the shade of Allah receiving all good.

Note: The first part of the Hadith [visiting the grave will remind you of the Hereafter] has also been recorded in other authentic Hadith collections.

(See Sharhul Ihya, vol. 10 pg. 362)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
