What is meant by ‘This Hadith is suitable to quote and practice upon’

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

In some of your answers you state:

‘This Hadith is suitable to quote and practice upon.’

What does this mean? Can you please give a detailed answer.

Answer

My esteemed teacher, Al-Muhaddith Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah (hafizahullah) has recently prepared a detailed treatise on this issue, which will soon be available insha Allah.

(Update, 17/01/2017: This book is now available, alhamdulillah.)

In essence, the vast majority of Muhadithun (Hadith Masters) and Fuqaha (Jurists) have stated that weak Hadiths are suitable to quote and for practice, with certain conditions.

(Intro to Al-Arba’un lin Nawawi. Also see: Al-Adhkar lin Nawawi, pg.8 and footnotes of Shaykh ‘Awwamah (hafizahullah) on Tadribur Rawi, vol.4 pg.524-532)

After verifying that the conditions are met, we [at Hadith Answers] usually then state that the narration in question is suitable.

However, it is better to also quote authentic Hadiths on the topic. One should actually avoid only citing weak Hadiths. Wisdom is needed whenever one quotes Hadiths, especially weak ones.

We will insha Allah in the future prepare a detailed article on the issue of weak Hadiths being suitable for practice.

Time doesn’t allow us -at the moment- to dedicate our efforts to that topic right now.
