The Hadith narrator ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Ubayd ibn ‘Umayr Al Laythi

I would like to ask who was ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Ubayd ibn ‘Umayr?

Answer

Imam ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Ubayd ibn ‘Umayr Al Laythi (rahimahullah) was a Tabi’i. His father, ‘Ubayd ibn ‘Umayr (rahimahullah) was born during the lifetime of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Ubayd ibn ‘Umayr (rahimahullah) reported Hadith from several Sahabah, including Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar ibn Khattab and ‘Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhum). He also took Hadith from Talq ibn Habib and from his contemporary, Thabit Al Bunani (rahimahullah).

Imams Ibn Shihab Az Zuhri, Jarir ibn Hazim, ‘Ata ibn As Saib, Layth ibn Abi Sulaym were among his students.

Many senior Muhaddithun including Imams Abu Zur’ah, Abu Hatim, ‘Ijli and Ibn Hibban (rahimahumullah) have declared him reliable (thiqah). He was known to be Mustajabud da’wah [one whose du’as were readily answered].

The famous Hadith authors [of the sihah sittah], except Imam Bukhari have accepted his narrations.

He passed away a martyr while in battle, in the year 112/113 A.H.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
