The rights of the road/pathway

What is the reference for this Hadith and can it be quoted?

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Beware of sitting in the roadways.” They said, ‘O Rasulullah!, we must have places where we can sit and talk together.’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘If you must sit there, then give the road its rights.’ They asked, ‘What are the rights of the roadway?’ He said, ‘Lowering the gaze, refraining from causing harm, returning greeting, enjoining good and forbidding wrong.’

Answer

Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah) have recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Al Khudri (radiyallahu ‘anhu). The Hadith is therefore authentic and suitable to quote.

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 2465-6229 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2121-2161)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
