Imam Sha’bi’s (rahimahullah) response to a question regarding Shaytan’s wife

Could you mention the reference for this please?

A’amash (rahimahullah)  narrated: “A man came to Sha’bi (rahimahullah) and asked: “What is the name of the wife of Iblis? He replied, ‘That is a wedding ceremony I did not attend!’”

Answer

Imam Ibn ‘Asakir (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration.

(Tarikh Dimashq, vol. 25 pg. 415/416)

This narration is also cited in the following sources:

  1. Tahdhibul Kamal, vol. 14 pg. 37
  2. Tarikhul Islam, vol. 5 pg. 75
  3. Siyaru A’alamin Nubala, vol. 4 pg. 312

In one version, the narration states that Imam Sha’bi (rahimahullah) was asked, ‘Does Iblis has a wife?’ Imam Sha’bi replied, ‘That is a wedding ceremony I did not attend.’ He then said, “I then remembered the Verse wherein Allah Ta’ala says ‘Do you take him [Iblis] and his progeny as friends besides Me..?’ (Surah Kahf, Verse: 50) and I realised that he could only have a progeny if he had a wife.”

(Tarikh Dimashq, vol. 25 pg. 416)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
