A narration stating Ibn ‘Abbas’s (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) view on carrion

Is this Hadith authentic?

It is reported that Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) said regarding carrion, “What is forbidden is what is eaten i.e. its meat. As for its skin, teeth, bones, fur and wool, they are permissible [to use].”

Answer

Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) has recorded this statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) with a very weak chain.

(As Sunanul Kubra, vol. 1 pg. 23. Refer: Al Muhaddhab of ‘Allamah Dhahabi, vol. 1 pg. 24, Mizanul I’tidal, vol. 2 pg. 181 and Taqribut Tahdhib: 8002)

Note: I have merely answered your question regarding the authenticity of the narration in question. This should therefore not be viewed as a Fiqh ruling/fatwa. Kindly contact a Mufti/Darul Ifta for a fatwa on this matter.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.

A narration of this nature cannot be relied upon to attribute a particular juristic view to a Sahabi (radiyallahu ‘anhu).
