‘Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud’s (radiyallahu ‘anhu) advice regarding fulfilling obligatory deeds and abstaining from sin

Is this narration authentic?

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said:

“Fulfil whatever has been imposed on you [by the Shari’ah], then you will become the greatest worshipper among people. Abstain from the prohibitions [haram acts], then you will become the most pious of people and be content with whatever Allah has apportioned for you, then you will be the wealthiest of people.”

Answer

This statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) is recorded in the following sources:

  1. Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam Hannad, number: 1032, with a sound chain.
  2. Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam Abu Dawud, pg. 197, with slight difference in the sequence
  3. Shu’abul Iman: 197 and 8119.

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) also offered similar advice to Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu). See here.
