Feeding people out of joy at completing a portion of the Quran

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Could you give me the Arabic reference to when ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar finished Surah Baqarah and then slaughtered a camel to feed everyone .

Answer

I have not seen this about Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu’anhuma) himself.

However this has been recorded about his father; Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu’anhu).

Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) has recorded from Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu’anhuma) that when [his father], Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu’anhu) completed the memorisation of Surah Baqarah, he slaughtered a camel.’

(Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 1805)

Note: One should avoid wastage, or creating a sense of feasting, especially in light of the global suffering of the Ummah. Millions are starving and are therefore much more deserving.

On such joyous occasions, one could perhaps also feed them in gratitude to Allah’s favour.

My beloved Father, Moulana Haroon Abasoomar saheb (hafizahullah) -the Ameer of Darul Hadith- passionately emphasises on this advice.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
