Take account of yourself before your accountability is taken by Allah

Is this authentically attributed to Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu)?

“Take account of yourself before it is taken by Allah”.

Answer

This narration is recorded in several Hadith sources, among them:

  1. Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam Ahmad ibn Hambal: 633
  2. Kitabuz Zuhd of Imam ‘Abdullah ibn Al Mubarak: 306
  3. Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah: 35600

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has also cited this narration.

(Sunan Tirmidhi, after Hadith: 2459)

There is an omission in the chain before Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu). However, the narration is suitable to quote.
