When Allah intends good for a person he allows him to carry out good deeds

Who is this narration attributed to and please mention the reference?

إذا أراد الله بعبد شرا أغلق عليه باب العمل وفتح عليه باب الجدل

Answer

Imam Abu Nu’aym and Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahumallah) have recorded this narration as the statement of the famous Saint, Ma’ruf Al Karkhi (rahimahullah).

(Hilyatul Awliya, vol. 8 pg. 361, Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 1692)

The complete narration is as follows:

When Allah Ta’ala intends good for a person, he opens the door for him to carry out [good] deeds and closes the door to arguments. And when Allah intends evil for a person, he closes the door for him to carry out [good] deeds and opens the door of arguments.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
