Regarding Salatul Kusuf [Salah performed during an eclipse], what is the meaning of these words in Sahih Muslim, ‘Yukhaw wifullaahu bihima ibadah’?
Answer
Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah) have recorded this narration. The part in question translates as, ‘Allah Ta’ala frightens His servants through them’ [i.e. the sun and moon].
The Hadith as appears in Sahih Muslim is as follows:
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse due to anyone’s death, but Allah frightens His slaves through them. They do not eclipse because of the death of anyone. When you see [an eclipse] then perform Salah and make du’a until the eclipse clears”
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 1041-1057-3204 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 911)
The commentators explain, these occurrences like eclipses etc. are contrary to the norm. Allah Ta’ala creates these signs occasionally [to display His Power] and so that we [out of the fear of Allah’s Power] abandon sins and return to His obedience.
