Hold on to ‘Uthman (radiyallahu ‘anhu) in times of trials

I heard a narration wherein Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said that there will be trials and tribulations after me and you should stay with ‘Uthman (radiyallahu ‘anhu) in these times.

Answer

Imam Ahmad, Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah and Imam Hakim (rahimahumullah) have recorded this narration on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

When Sayyiduna ‘Uthman (radiyallahu ‘anhu) was besieged, Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) sought permission to say a few words. After praising Allah, he said, “I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) say, ‘You will encounter trials and difference of opinion after me.’ Someone said, ‘Who should we go to/What should we do, O Rasulullah?’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said whilst pointing to Sayyiduna ‘Uthman (radiyallahu ‘anhu): ‘Go to the trustworthy one and his companions.’

(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 2 pg. 345, Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 32712 and Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 3 pg. 99)

Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has declared the Hadith authentic and Hafiz Dhahabi concurs.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
