What to do with difference of opinion in Hadith gradings

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Sometimes we come across narrations that have been quoted by senior scholars which you have ruled as unauthentic. In such a case what should one do?

Should one caution the general masses about that narration too?

Answer

It is possible that the senior scholar in question was of a different opinion. Difference of opinion in the grading of Hadith is a reality. Such differences are to be tolerated as long as they are from legitimate sources.

To avoid fitnah and confusion, one should better abstain from discussing this with the general masses.

As a rule, when one has a different view on issues like this (where there is difference of opinion, and expressing one’s difference may cause discord) it is best to personally practice on the view that one is convinced of and leave the rest to practice on the opposing view, as long as its proponent is a qualified authority.
