Benefit of repentance (tawbah)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

إذا تاب العبد عن ذنوبه أنسى الله حفظته ذنوبه ، وأنسى ذلك جوارحه ومعالمه من الأرض حتى يلقى الله يوم القيامة وليس عليه شاهد من الله بذنب

Answer

Translation

‘When a slave repents for his sins, Allah Ta’ala causes everything to forget his sin; from the Angels, to his own limbs as well as the other parts of the ground. When such a person will meet Allah on the day of Qiyamah there will be no witness to his sins [that he repented from].’

This Hadith is recorded by Imams Ibn ‘Asakir, Hakim Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) and others and is declared weak but suitable to quote as an incentive for repenting.

(Targhib, vol.4 pg.94-95 , Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 513 and As-Sirajul Munir, vol.1 pg.113)

The following sound (hasan) Hadith offers broader support for the narration in question:

‘The one who repents is like he who has not sinned at all.’

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 4250 and Tabarani; see Majma’uz Zawaid, vol.10 pg.200 . Also see Targhib, vol.4 pg.97 & Al-Maqasidul Hasanah, Hadith: 313)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
