Du’a when sighting a new moon

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

What du’a can one recite when sighting the new moon?

Answer

Among the du’as to be recited is the following:

Allahu Akbar! Allahumma Ahillahu ‘alayna bil yumni wal iman, was salamati wal islam, wat tawfiqi lima tuhibbu Rabbuna wa tarda. Rabbi wa RabbukAllah

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3451 & Sunan Darimi, Hadith: 1687)

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has classified this as sound (hasan gharib)

Note: In some versions the highlighted words appear slightly different, as: yuhibbu Rabbuna wa yarda.

One may recite either of them.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
