The du’a of Adam (‘alayhis salam)

What is the source for this narration?

“When Allah Ta’ala sent Adam (‘alayhis salam) to the Earth he went to Ka’bah, prayed two units of Salah then Allah inspired him to say the following supplication:

‘O Allah, you know what I keep secret and what is open so accept my excuse, you are aware of my needs so grant me my request, you know what is in my soul so forgive my error. O Allah, I ask you for enlightening faith, and true conviction, until I know that what afflicts me is only due to what you have prescribed for me and grant me the ability to be happy over what you decreed’.

So Allah Ta’ala revealed to him, O Adam I have accepted your tawbah, pardoned your error, if anyone supplicates with these words his sins will be pardoned, I will suffice all his concerns, I will repel Shaytan from him, I will accomplish every transaction, I will grant him the world even if he does not desire it.”

Answer

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyidah ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu ‘anha).

(Al Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 5971)

However this narration has been transmitted with a chain that consists of a very weak narrator. In fact some Muhaddithun have also found this narrator to be a liar.

(Al Kamil, vol. 10 pg. 164, Al Mughni Fid Du’afa, vol. 2 pg. 459 and Lisanul Mizan, vol. 8 pg. 276. Also see: Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 10 pg. 183, Ad Durrul Manthur, Surah Baqarah, Verse: 37 andAl Atharul Marfu’ah of ‘Allamah ‘Abdul Hay Al-Lakhnawi, pg. 108)

Imam Abu Hatim Ar Razi (rahimahullah) has declared another version of this narration as very weak (munkar).

(Kitabul ‘Ilal, vol. 2 pg. 188 Hadith: 2091)

This Hadith makes mention of Adam (‘alayhis salam) going to the Ka’bah and performing Salah. Hafiz Ibn Kathir (rahimahullah) states that there are no authentic narrations from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) which suggest that the Ka’bah was built before Ibrahim (‘alayhis salam).

(Al Bidayah Wan Nihayah, vol. 1 pg. 241)

Imam ‘Abdul Ghani Al Maqdisi (demise 600 A.H) has also recorded the narration in question with a shorter version of the du’a and slight difference in the rewards. However in this version, the narrator explicitly states ‘I have found this narration in some books’ [Which in this case probably refers to Historical sources].

(At Targhib Fid Du’a Wal Hatthi ‘Alayhi, Hadith: 67)

In summary, the narration in question should not be quoted as a Hadith of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). However this du’a has an excellent meaning, one may recite it without anticipating the rewards mentioned therein.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
