Hadiths regarding the urine of an infant

Kindly provide the reference for the following Hadiths:

1) Narrated from Ummu Qays bint Mihsan (radiyallahu ‘anha) that she brought her son who was not yet eating food to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) sat him on his lap, and he [the child] urinated on his garment, so he called for some water and sprinkled it, but did not wash it.

2) Narrated from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (radiyallahu ‘anhu) that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said regarding the urine of an infant boy: “Sprinkle the urine of a boy and wash the urine of a girl.” Qatadah (rahimahullah) said: This applies so long as they are not eating food; if they are eating food then it must be washed in both cases.

Answer

1) Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah) have recorded this Hadith.

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 223 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 287)

2) Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration and he has declared it authentic.

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 610, Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 380/381)

The Hanafi Scholars have explained that the above Hadiths actually explain the need for washing the urine of the girl more thoroughly than that of the boy.

This does not mean that the urine of the boy will not be washed at all.

(Refer: ‘Umdatul Qari, hadith: 223)

Note: The above should not be viewed as a Fiqh ruling. Kindly refer to a reputable Mufti/Darul Ifta for clarification on this issue.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
