An unauthentic narration regarding ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) and the Hajarul Aswad

What is the status of the lengthy narration wherein Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Al Khudri (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that he once performed Haj with Sayyiduna ‘Umar and Sayyiduna ‘Umar was unaware of the fact that the Hajarul Aswad will be a means of benefit/harm to us. Sayyiduna ‘Ali rectified him, upon which Sayyiduna ‘Umar thanked him and said, ‘I ask Allah to protect me from living among any nation except if you are present’?

Answer

Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration in Al Mustadrak.

(Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 1 pg. 457)

This Hadith however has been reported with a chain that consists of a narrator who has been declared extremely weak. Some Muhaddithun have also declared him a fabricator. Imam Daraqutni (rahimahullah) further states that he was a Shi’i.

Thus, in addition to him being extremely weak, the nature of this narration supports his corrupt beliefs. The Hadith is therefore not suitable to quote.
