An amazing dream of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)

What is the authenticity of the following?

Sayyiduna ‘Abdur Rahman ibn Samurah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that once Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) came out to us and said:

“Last night I saw a marvelous dream. I saw a man from my Ummah and the Angel of Death approached him to take his soul, but the man’s obedience to his parents came and kept the Angel at bay.’ ‘Thereafter I saw a man from my Ummah subjected to the torment of the grave but then his ablution came and rescued him from it.’ ‘Then I saw a man from my Ummah surrounded by devils, then his remembrance of Allah came to him and delivered him from their midst.’ ‘Then I saw a man from my Ummah who was surrounded by the Angels of torment, but his Salah came to him and rescued him from their hands.’

‘Then I saw a man from my Ummah who was panting out of severe thirst; every time he passed by a pond he was driven away, then his fasting in Ramadan came to him and provided him water and quenched his thirst.’

‘Then I saw a man from my Ummah as the Ambiya were sitting in circles; each time the man drew near to a circle he was pushed away, but then his purificatory bath from intercourse [ghusl] came to him and took him by the hand and sat him down next to me.’ ‘Then I saw a man from my Ummah enveloped by darkness in front of him and behind him and to his right and left and above and below, but then his Hajj and ‘Umrah came to him and took him out of the darkness and entered him into light.’

‘Then I saw a man from my Ummah who was addressing the believers but they would not speak with him, but then his maintenance of family ties came to him and called out: “O assembly of believers! Speak to him, for he maintained the ties of kinship.” After this the believers spoke with him and shook his hand.’ ‘Then I saw a man from my Ummah trying to protect himself from the blaze and evil of the Fire by covering his hand over his face, but then his charity came to him and veiled his face and covered his head.’ ‘Then I saw a man from my Ummah who was seized by the Angels of punishment from every direction, but then his act of enjoining the good and forbidding the evil came and delivered him from their clutches and took him in the company of the Angels of mercy.’

‘Then I saw a man from my Ummah whose scroll of deeds was placed in his left hand, but then his fear of Allah took his scroll and placed it in his right hand.’ ‘Then I saw a man from my Ummah whose scale-pan of good deeds was light, but then his goodly loans came and made his scale-pan heavy.’ ‘Then I saw a man from my Ummah who was standing over the precipice of Hell, but then his fearful apprehension of Allah came and delivered him and he continued on his way.’ ‘Then I saw a man from my Ummah who had fallen into the Fire, but then there came to him his tears that he cried out of fear of Allah while in this world and they took him out of it.’

”Then I saw a man from my Ummah crossing the Traverse (Sirat); he was quivering like a branch of a date palm, when suddenly his salutations [durud] sent upon me came to him and calmed him and stopped his shaking.’ ‘Then I saw a man from my Ummah who had reached the gates of Jannah but it’s gates had closed and he was locked out, but then the testimony of “there is no God but Allah” [Shahadah] came and opened the gates.

Answer

The Hadith in question has been recorded in various Hadith collections like Al Mu’jamul Kabir, Nawadirul Usul, Musnadul Firdaws, At Targhib of Abu Musa Al Madini, Makarimul Akhlaq of Kharaiti and Tarikh Ibn ‘Asakir with variation in the wordings as well as differences in the sequence.

The Hadith has been reported with numerous chains, some of which have been declared weak and others have been considered very weak by the Muhaddithun.

However, in addition to the various chains supporting each other, ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) has stated that other separate Hadiths support [many parts of the Hadith in question].
