Hadith on accepting a decent proposal for marriage

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

What’s the strength of this hadith?

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said,

“If someone proposes whose religion (piety) and character is pleasing then get him married. If you do not do so, there will be chaos on the earth.”

What is meant by chaos?

Answer

1. This Hadith is recorded by Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) in his Sunan, hadith: 1084.

The chain of this Hadith has some contradictions. Its better to quote the hadith that Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) cites after this one which has very similar wordings:

2. Sayyiduna Abu Hatim Al-Muzani (radiyallahu’anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) said:

“If someone approaches you (with a proposal) and his religion (piety) and character is pleasing to you, then get him married. If you do not do so, there will be trials (fitnah) and chaos (fasad) on the earth…”

(Sunan Tirmidhi, hadith: 1085)

Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has declared this one as sound (hasan gharib)

Commentary

The meaning of ‘there will be chaos on earth’ is that this will lead to the spread of immorality, zina etc.

There will also be an imbalance in society, since many individuals will be unmarried.

(Faydul Qadir, hadith: 347)
