Starting a new recital of Quran when completing

Question

When completing a khatam of the Holy Quran, normally we read till Muflihun (in Surah Baqarah). Is this a Hadith or practice of the pious?

Answer

Sayyiduna Ubayy ibn K’ab (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports: “When Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would read ‘Qul A’udhu bi Rabbin nas’ (Surah Nas) then he would read Surah Fatihah and Surah Baqarah till ‘Wa ulaika humul muflihun’.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would then make the du’a of completion of the Holy Quran and stand up.

(Darimi; See Al Itqan fi ‘Ulumil Quran, vol. 1 pg. 158)

‘Allamah Suyuti (rahimahullah) has classified the above narration as sound (hasan)

(Al Itqan fi ‘Ulumil Quran, vol. 1 pg. 158)

Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) and others have also cited narrations with similar meanings in their respective books.
