Correct pronunciation of the du’a during calamity

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

What is the correct pronunciation for the masnun du’a to be recited when befallen by a calamity?

Allahumma Ajirni fi musibati wakhlif li khayran mina

Answer

This du’a is reported in Sahih Muslim, hadith: 2123

The commentators have stated that it could be recited in a few ways, viz.

1.

اللهم آجِرني في مصيبتي وأَخْلِفْ  لي خيرا منها

Allahumma aajirni fi musibati wa akhlif li khayram mina (with a madd on the alif –after Allahumma & a kasrah on the jim of aajirni)

2.

اللهم اْجِرني في مصيبتي وأَخْلِفْ لي خيرا منها

Allahumma-jirni fi musibati wa akhlif li khayram mina (with a sukun on the alif -after Allahumma, & a kasrah on the jim)

3.

اللهم اْجُرني في مصيبتي وأَخْلِفْ  لي خيرا منها

Allahumma-jurni fi musibati wa akhlif li khayran mina (with a sukun on the alif-after Allahumma, & a dammah on the jim)

In all of the above, the word is ‘wa akhlif li’, not ‘wakhlif li’.
