The virtue of saying ‘Astaghfirullahal ‘Azim Alladi La Ilaha illa Huwal Hayyul Qayyumu wa atubu ilayhi’ daily

Is this correct?

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:

“Whoever reads Astaghfirullahal ‘Azim Alladi La Ilaha illa Huwal Hayyul Qayyumu wa atubu ilayhi five times daily, all of his sins will be forgiven except the rights of other people.”

Answer

There are several Hadiths which mention the reward for reciting Astaghfirullahal ‘Azim Alladi La Ilaha illa Huwal Hayyul Qayyumu wa atubu ilayh:

1) Sayyiduna Zayd (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “Whoever says Astaghfirullahal ‘Azim Alladi La Ilaha illa Huwal Hayyul Qayyumu wa atubu ilayhi [once], his sins will be forgiven even if he had fled from battle”

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3577, Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 1512)

‘Allamah Mundhiri has declared the chain reliable (jayyid)

(Targhib, vol. 2 pg. 470)

2) Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever says Astaghfirullahal ‘Azim Alladi La Ilaha illa Huwal Hayyul Qayyumu wa atubu ilayhi thrice, his sins will be forgiven even if he had fled from battle”

(Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 1 pg. 511 and vol. 2 pg. 17-118. Declared authentic by Imam Hakim)

3) Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Al Khudri (radiyallahu ‘anhu) says: “Whoever says Astaghfirullahal ‘Azim Alladi La Ilaha illa Huwal Hayyul Qayyumu wa atubu ilayhi five times, his sins will be forgiven even they are like the foam of the ocean”

(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, Hadith: 30060)

Shaykh Muhammad ‘Awwamah (hafizahullah) states that this chain is sound (hasan). Although this has been recorded as the statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) it will be understood that he heard this from Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).

One may practise on any of the above versions.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
