What is the authenticity of the narration which mentions that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would receive revelation when Sayyidah ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu ‘anha) was in bed with him? She was the only wife who enjoyed this bounty.
Answer
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration. The Hadith is therefore authentic.
The full narration is as follows:
“People would give gifts to Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) when it was ‘Aaisha’s (radiyallahu ‘anha) turn. ‘Aaishah (radiyallahu ‘anah) said, ‘My co-wives gathered by Ummu Salamah (radiyallahu ‘anha) and said, ‘O Ummu Salamah! People give their gifts [to Nabi sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) on ‘Aaisha’s day. We desire the good just as ‘Aaishah does. Go and tell Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) to order the people to give gifts to him wherever he is, or wherever his turn is.’
Ummu Salamah (radiyallahu ‘anha) mentioned this to Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) but he turned away. When he returned, she mentioned it again and he turned away again. When she mentioned it to him for the third time, he said, ‘Do not trouble me regarding ‘Aaishah. Revelation does not come to me when I am under the blanket of any woman among you except her”
Sayyidah Ummu Salamah (radiyallahu ‘anha) immediately repented.
