Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwaa.com

Assalamu alaykum,

Since we will have two courses Insha Allah running soon i.e. Nur al Idah & Mukhtasar Al-Quduri, we request you to highlight the Salient features of both texts and where they sit in terms of a beginner’s quest of gaining knowledge in the Fiqh of Imam Abu Haneefa (RA).

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salām wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,

Mukhtasar al-Quduri is one of the most important mutun (texts) in the Hanafi Madhab. It is very reliable and has been used by students over many centuries. In fact, there is hardly any Hanafi scholar who would not have a copy of this work.

The importance of it further increases by many works revolving around it. Many have put it in poetry form or wrote commentaries for it. Thus, it is extremely important for students to first study this book as the basis.

The author, ‘Allāmah Shurumbulāli wrote the book after his students insisted that he writes something of benefit to those who have no prior knowledge in Fiqh. The book covers the chapter of Ṭahārah (purity), and four main pillars of Islām, viz Ṣalāh (prayer), Ṣawm (fasting), Zakāh (obligatory charity) and Ḥaj. Allāh Ta’ālā has blessed the book with such acceptance that the book is taught in almost all Ḥanafi institutes, whether they are in Turkey, the Middle East or the Indo-Pak sub continant or other parts of the world. In fact, numerous students go on to memorise the book.

The author took note of his readers and ensured that he presents the book in the easiest manner and format possible. Thus, he kept it short, did not mention much difference of opinions or proofs, and took great care that to only mention the most authentic and preferred view in the Ḥanafi Madhab. It is precisely due to this that we find ‘Allāmah Ibn Ābidīn (a great Mufti and scholar of his time who consulted numerous books endeavouring to present the most authentic views) constantly quoting the views mentioned in Nūral-Idhāḥ in his magnum opus, Radd al-Muḥtār. Likewise, numerous Mufties (clerics) always referred to Nūr al-Īḍhāḥ when issuing verdicts. However, in spite of so much care taken to mention the preferred view (and he was greatly successful in it), there are very few places where his contemporaries and scholars who came after him preferred an alternate view. This views will be outlined in the lessons, inshā Allāh. Thus, once completing this book, the student should know know all the basics of Fiqh, and it will be easy for him to fulfil his basic acts of worship correctly.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best
