Darood at the beginning and end of Dua.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwa-TT.com
Question:

It is established from the traditions of the Prophet (saw) to recite Durood at the beginning of the dua. It is a common practice among many scholars to complete their dua with Durood also. Is there evidence for this practice?

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Reciting Durood (sending peace and salutations upon the Holy Prophet ﷺ) is an act of great merit and rewards, whether it be in the beginning, ending or middle of one’s supplication. Sending Durood upon the Prophet ﷺ makes a person’s supplication more readily accepted. In fact if a person’s supplication comprises of only Durood, from the beginning to the end it will earn him great rewards and forgiveness.

It was narrated that Ubayy ibn Ka‘b (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

I said: O Messenger of Allah, I send a great deal of blessings upon you (Durood), how much of my supplication should be sending Durood upon you? He said: “Whatever you wish.” I said: One quarter? He said : “Whatever you wish, and if you do more, that will be better for you.” I said: One half? He said: “Whatever you wish and if you do more, that will be better for you.” I said: Two thirds? He said : “Whatever you wish and if you do more, that will be better for you.” I said: I will make the entire of my supplication for you. He said: “Then your concerns will be taken care of and your sins will be forgiven.” {At-Tirmidhi}

The above Hadith shows the importance and benefits of send Durood upon the Prophet ﷺ. It is better though if a person, together with sending abundance of Durood upon the Prophet ﷺ supplicates to Allah ﷻ for the fulfilment of his needs and concerns, worldly as well as the hereafter.

Regarding specifically to your question, it is recommended and encouraged to send Durood upon the Prophet ﷺ at the beginning and ending of one’s supplication as practiced by our learned scholars. Imam al-Bayhaqi records in his famous compilation Su’ab al Imaan on the authority of Jabir (ra) the following:

لا تجعلوني كقدح الراكب إن الراكب يملأ قدحه ماء ثم يضعه ثم يأخذ في معاليقه حتى إذا فرغ جاء إلى القدح، فإن كان له حاجة في الشراب شرب، وإن لم يكن له حاجة في الشراب توضأ، فإن لم يكن له حاجة في الوضوء أهراقه،

ولكن اجعلوني في أول الدعاء وفي آخر الدعاء.

Do not place me (send Durood upon me) in a manner a rider regards his water vessel, i.e. he fills it with water and hangs it at the back of his conveyance. He uses it whenever the need arises i.e. upon completing his journey, when thirsty and for Wudhu. If he doesn’t have a need for it then he simply empties it. Rather place me (i.e. send durood upon me) at the beginning of your supplication as well as the end of your supplication.

Mulla Ali Qari (ra) in his commentary of Shifa states that what the Prophet ﷺ meant is that; do not delay in my remembrance rather place it before everything.[1]

Ibn Atheer (ra) records this narration in his Jaami’ al-Usool on the authority of Umar (ra). In this narration the Prophet ﷺ said; remember me! (send durood upon me) in the beginning of your supplication, the middle of your supplication and the end of your supplication.[2]

Ibn Atheer (ra) then explains the meaning of Hadith; a rider puts his belongings on his conveyance and hangs his water vessel at the extreme end due to its insignificance. Thereafter, the Prophet prohibits his followers from sending Durood upon him in a manner a rider does with his water vessel i.e. do not regard the Durood of the Prophet as insignificant or less important. Ibn Atheer (ra) then states that what is meant by the statement of the Prophet ﷺ is; encouragement, not only to send Durood at the end of one’s supplication but at the beginning and middle also.[3]

The experts of Hadith however, regard the above narrations as Dhaeef (weak).[4] Nevertheless such narrations may be acted upon as the subject matter in reference is virtue and was also the practice of our pious predecessors.

Ibn al-Qayim (ra) mentions in his book entitled Jalaa al-Afhaam fi Fadl al-Salaah wa’l-Salaam ‘ala Khayr il-Anaam

When sending Durood upon the Prophet ﷺ in one supplication there are three levels;

(i) First Level- sending Durood after praising and glorifying Allah ﷻ, before asking for the fulfillment of one’s needs.

(ii) Second level- sending Durood in the beginning, middle and end of one’s supplication.

(iii) Third Level- sending Durood at the beginning and ending of one’s supplication and thus imploring Allah ﷻ between the two Duroods.

NB: The third level is greatest in rewards and virtues.

Abu Sulaiman al Daraani r.a.[5] (205هـ) said; whosoever desires that his needs be fulfilled then he should begin his supplication by sending Durood upon the Prophet ﷺ thereafter ask from Allah ﷻ his needs, thereafter completes his supplication by sending Durood upon the Prophet ﷺ for certainly Durood upon the Prophet is accepted and Allah ﷻ is way more generous and merciful to accept that which is at the beginning and end thereafter omits that which is in between.[6]
