Women visiting graveyard

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwa.org.au
1) Can females visit graveyards?
2) Is it permissible to visit the graves of pious people? What about singing qawali and doing dhamaal there?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

1) Elderly women are permitted to visit the graveyard provided that they do so in order to admonish themselves and to remember death, not to cry or to renew grief over the loss of their loved ones. Young women are not permitted to go to the graveyard.

2) Yes, it is permissible to visit the graves of pious people provided that one does not engage in any type of bid’ah (innovation) there. Qawali is prohibited in Islam. What is dhamaal? If dhamaal is to sing and to dance then it is also strictly prohibited in Islam.
