Using mouthwash containing alcohol

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Q. I have heard alcohol can be used for medicinal purposes. I would like to find out if a dentist has recommended the use of a mouthwash containing alcohol, can this be used since it is the only mouthwash in the market that can help with a bad case of plaque as well as the wearing away of one’s teeth and gingivitis. Please let me know if it is okay according to shariah for this to be used.

A. If it is the only mouthwash you can use for this purpose, and it has been recommended by the dentist, then it will be allowed (to use). However, you must be careful that it does not trickle down the throat (while using it).

And Allah knows best.
