Contributing to a Health Plan

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Q. Can you state if one is contributing to a compulsory Health plan at work if they should utilise it and to what extent.

A. The health plan which a company is connected to, is normally one which is a part of an Insurance Company which gives this facility to the company. If this is the case, then it will not be proper for you to contribute to this health plan seeing that Insurance Companies deal in interest bearing transactions. In such ‘plans’ you may either make a claim for an amount which exceeds the amount you have paid in premiums, or you may receive less than what you paid. So, in these ‘plans’ you either ‘gain’ or ‘lose’.

In situations where it is compulsory upon you to contribute to this ‘plan’ (in your work place), then it will be allowed for you to do so, and make claims for your health to the extent/amount you have paid in premiums.

And Allah knows best.
