Bone char being used in sugar. Whats the ruling on this and what should be done?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Assalaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah,

I’ve heard of bone char being used in sugar. Whats the ruling on this and what should be done?

Wa Alaikum Assalaam,
The ‘bone char’ or ‘bone ash’ is used to bleach and filter cane sugar, but not all cane sugar is refined with bone char. It is used as a decolorizing filter, which allows the sugar cane to achieve its desirable white color. The bone used is that of Cattle, and the experts have stated that no part or particle of the bone is mixed with the sugar. As such, it will be permissible to use the sugar.
And Allah Knows Best.
