Removal of the hair during menstruation and ten days prior to qurbani

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulihsan.com
Q: Please can you advise the Islamic view on the removal of the hair (pubic, underarm and other) and the cutting of nails during
•    Menstruation
•    Ten days prior to qurbani

Thank you,

A:
1. It is makrooh for one in the state of ritual impurity (Janaaba) to trim the nails and cut pubic hairs etc. Similarly Ulama also explain that this should be avoided in the state of menses.

However if the nails or pubic hair etc. are extremely long then these may be removed.

2. It is mustahabb (recommended) and rewarding for one intending to sacrifice a Qurbaani animal in the days of Qurbani, not to trim or cut his nails and hair from the commencement of the month of Zul Hijjah until after his animal is sacrificed. This is mentioned in the Hadith. Accordingly one should try and adhere to this act of virtue.

Hazrat Umm Salamah (Radiyallahu Anha) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: “When the first ten Zul Hijjah enter and any of you intend making Qurbani then he should touch (remove) any part of his hair and skin (nails).” In another narration it is stated: “He should not pluck any hair nor should he cut any nails.” In another narration it is stated: “The person who sees the crescent of Zul Hijjah and intends to make Qurbani should not pluck his hair nor his nails.” (Muslim, Mishkaat Pg. 127)
