What is the Islamic ruling regarding layering hair, having a fringe, colouring hair and shaping eyebrows?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulihsan.com

January 2009

Q: It has been brought to my attention that layering hair, having a fringe, colouring hair and shaping eyebrows is foreign to Islam and is regarded as a sin. I am ignorant regarding the accuracy of this. I would appreciate it if I could be provided with an explanation regarding the aforementioned issues with an inclusion of the relevant Hadith that justify the ruling. May Allah (SWT) reward you abundantly (Ameen).

A:

With regards to the layering of the hair, it is not permissible for women to layer their hair. If the eyebrows are dense and appear abnormal  which may cause the husband to disincline from his wife, then it will be permissible to clip them to the extent that would make them appear normal. However, if the clipping or shaping of the eyebrows are done to emulate fashion, then it will not be permissible. Similarly, cutting a fringe is not permissible.

Women are permitted to dye their hair provided that this is not done with the intention of emulating fashion or resembling non-Muslim women or women with loose morals.
